God's Sovereignty in the Midst of Tragedy

This has been yet another not so normal week here in the Dominican Republic. We only made it to campus one day this week. On Monday the Dominican Republic celebrated their Constitution Day so the university was closed. On Tuesday, there was a national transportation strike. We were advised not to leave our apartments because things could get out of hand. Looking out the window of our apartment, however, I saw multiple public transportation vehicles. Maybe they didn't get the memo that they were on strike?

Yesterday we went to the bank to get money to pay rent for this month. Our plan was to go to from the lawyer's office after paying rent to the Packaging place, as a lot of our team received goodies from the USA this week. It took us a lot longer than we expected to get these errands done. We got in a guagua (like a mini-bus type thing) that didn't go the route we thought (this is super frustrating. I think I'll stick to the public cars that only go up and down one street). After going completely out of our way, we made it to the correct street and jumped into a public car to our destination.

When we arrived back at our apartments, we received word that there was a major riot on campus and that the Vida meeting for that night had been cancelled and we were advised not to go near campus (we live about a 5 minute walk from campus).

We have never experienced a riot while on campus, and after yesterday's events, I am so thankful the Lord has protected us from experiencing this.

The students (and really the entire country) were/are protesting the tax reform bill that the President received to sign yesterday. Basically the government wants to increase taxes on everything and nobody's happy about it.

PLEASE pray for the Dominican Republic and for UASD.

I know that God will be glorified. I am praying that this causes students at UASD to think about who or what they are placing their faith and hope in. Praying the Lord will use this event to bring people into His Kingdom and praying that doors will be open for gospel conversations.

Dios les bendiga!

en Cristo,
Shannon
