I love when God totally meets you where you are through His Word. It's amazing that I can read the same scripture a hundred times and each time gain something new. This happened to me this week when I was spending time with the Lord. One of the most glorious things I get to do as I trust God to provide my financial needs for ministry is spending more time in the Word. I love it! Such a sweet time as I meet with people to share with them about my ministry with Campus crusade to sit at Jesus' feet and soak it all up!
If you haven't read 1 Kings 17 in a while, I suggest you do. Right now. I'm not kidding. OK, now that you've read it, what do you think? This story of God's provision never gets old for me. He is Jehovah Jireh. The God who provides.
Elijah completely trusted God to provide and obeyed Him. God told Elijah to leave where he was and drop everything he was doing, and to go. God tells Elijah that he has commanded the ravens to feed him. So Elijah went. Crazy. In obedience to the Lord, Elijah left and went to the brook east of the Jordan and God provided him food. Since there was a drought, the brook eventually dried up. I mean really? If I were Elijah, I'd be kind of mad at God for sending me to this specific place where He knew (because He's God) that the resources are going to dry up.
But, once again, God provides for Elijah. He tells him to leave that place and go to Zarephath to a widow that He has told to feed him. Again, Elijah is obedient and follows the Lord. Elijah runs into the widow (who probably had no idea God was using her to provide for Elijah) and asks her for food and water. The widow is unaware that the Lord will provide! She was prepared for her and her son to die.
Elijah asks the widow to take a huge step of faith and to give him food first and then her and her son. She did what Elijah told her to do and God multiplied her food and she had more than enough to eat, her and her son, for many days. WOW! She had no idea she was going to be blessed through her blessing.
This is such a great reminder that God provides through any and all circumstances. He never shows up late. His timing is always perfect. He can and will provide for our needs.
"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Phil 4:19
My prayer is that you would be encouraged by God's Word, His providence and His faithfulness. Walk in obedience. Beloved, He is Jehovah Jireh.
Blessings,
SJ
